Commentary on Kyle's Campaign Platform

This post is a commentary of Kyle Bristow's campaign platform for his run as a member of the Associated Students of Michigan State University (ASMSU) , MSU's student government, which was put in the previous post.

There are several logical fallacies and inaccuracies to Bristow’s arguments. The first point, about funding for homosexual groups, is discriminatory. It would deny all funding to any non-straight group, even if they otherwise qualified under ASMSU’s Funding Board. The board allows funding for all Registered Student organizations that are in financial need, are relatively new, or who’s planned activity can be of great benefit.

The second point shows misunderstanding of Kyle of the activities of several groups on campus. He first attacks the Hispanic group Culturas de Las Razas Unidas (CRU) as being anti-American. This is a bias of Kyle’s, who seems to view all Hispanics as illegal immigrants.

CRU’s Facebook group description shows no anti-American intent in the group

CRU’s mission is to increase the quality of life academically, socially, and culturally through retention and cultural programming while promoting Chicano/Latino unity and celebrating diversity at MSU through our membership at large and affiliated organizations.

Some of our goals behalf of CRU are as follows;

-Increase the level of unity and compromise among all of our Chicano/Latino affiliate organizations.

-Continue to coordinate programs that will educate and address issues that concern the Chicano/Latino community.

-Increase self-awareness through the cooperative exchange of ideas, viewpoints, culture and information

-Continue to fight for the recognition of the rights of the Chicano/Latino community.

We are really looking forward to working with all of you this year. We are also looking forward to partnering with you in efforts to increase Chicano/Latino community collaboration, communication and awareness at Michigan State University.”

Kyle makes insinuations that the LGBT Alliance group is anti-straight. The group’s website suggests otherwise, saying “We strive to create an environment on campus that is supportive for all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.”

http://www.msu.edu/~alliance/about/

Kyle advocates removing Arab Cultural society, North American Indigenous Student Organization, and the Asian Pacific American Student Organization, as putting in a European-American Cultural Society. He then says "If we choose not to eliminate the Black Council, then we must create a White Council". First it must be corrected that there is no Black Council at MSU (correct name is Black Student Alliance). Under his plan white people would get double representation with the European-American Cultural society and the White Council, which counters Kyle’s statement that ASMSU reps should assure that equality is maintained at ASMSU.

Kyle’s creation of a Nationalist Student Association disregards the needed input of international students into the student government, especially as the university tries to develop an international outreach.

Point three about allowing a Christian group, mistakenly regards Arab Cultural Society as a religious group. Arab Cultural Society represents all Arabic students, many of which are of various other religious, including Christian.

Part four about putting a flag in every classroom shows the narrow view of Kyle. The placement of the US flag is not the idea I wish to critique. His statement that “Spartans are proud to be citizens of the greatest nation on earth” disregards the large population of foreign students on campus. This is not a call to include all flags, or to not include the American flag, this is to correct Kyle’ misperception that MSU hosts only American students

Part five and seven shows Kyle’s hypocrisy on free speech. He derides MSU for bringing to speakers, radical Joe Carr and pro-affirmative action group By Any Means Necessary to campus and claims they should not have gotten funding (Part 5 subsection 1 and 3). In part seven he then calls for ASMSU to fund conservative speakers. Kyle’s view that money should be spent on those he agrees with and no one else follows the discriminatory logic of the first part calling for barring non-heterosexual organizations from receiving money.

Part seven includes a call to give money to the College Republicans. ASMSU is a non-partisan organization and does not give money to any political party or there affiliated college groups.

Part eight calls for the removal of Planned Parenthood from Grand River Avenue. This is off campus and outside the jurisdiction of ASMSU or the university.

This is America. There should be flags in the classroom.
Also what I think Kyle meant to say about Planned Parenthood is that all of them should be demolished and the doctors that perform abortion should be prosecuted for genocide and hung like the Nazi War criminals were.

so, what he's saying is that college should be like my high school where 150 of the supposed to be 600 from my class had to drop out and not get a high school diploma because they had a kid and were never taught proper safe sex techniques? the school district deemed safe sex illegal for teachers to teach. they also figured that all the students from my class in 1st grade till i was in 6th grade would 'just pick up grammar' which bombed horrifically, just to show how stupid they are.

i know how not having the planned parenthood site/education can affect a student body and ive seen how it can ruin the lives of people who do not know about safe sex techniques. students in college are even more sexually active than in high school. just removing the planned parenthood will make a bigger problem than what it is supposedly making.

I know how complicated it is to put a condom on ones penis. Any joker should be able to do this. If you need a class to learn this, perhaps it's best for society you do not reproduce.
People can buy condoms at the 7-11 down the road and if they have questions about sexual issues they can call their doctor.
Women are taught about reproductive issues from their mothers...guys from their fathers.
There is no justification for abortion. Ever. And no need for Planned Parenthood either!

Joe,

Many students in those school districts that strictly ban teaching of safe sex in sex ed classes also come from areas where misinformation is spread about contraception.

If you tell them condoms are totally ineffective, then it doesn;t matter whether or not they know how to roll them.

It makes about as much sense as telling them Pillow Pants will bite them if they go near.

Philip,

Do you really believe that teachers teaching that condoms don't work is actually happening? With the technology age we are in, I have a real hard time believing that anyone would believe that.

The Guttmacher Institute is about as impartial as the Right to Life.

the problem isnt knowing what to do with it, the problem is knowing whats out there. as being one of the people from a district or community that philip mentioned, i had never heard of a condom, birth control, abortion, anything related to safe sex and prevention of STD's till i got to college. its considered wrong to talk about sex and safe sex methods in my town. and no, im not from some backwater town, i live just outside of metro detroit.

Kyle,

Have you ever watched TV? Read a book, or a newspaper? Listened to the radio? Been to a party?

When you say you have never heard of a condom, I will say that you are flat out lying.

If it is true, you are one of 99.99% of people.

through high school i had no idea about any of that. the first one i saw i made a balloon out of it because i didnt know what it was.

and i was never one to really stay inside and watch tv or listen to the radio when i was a kid/high schooler. i ran around in the woods all day.

and, i can say im glad to be part of the minority (even if im not now, but then)

Hey YAFWATCH:

I read on the website of the State News that Chris Kulesza is the president of the student government. I think he is in YAF. If I recall things right, he is mentioned in a picture in the MSU yearbook as being a YAF member, and in the video of the Ryan Sorba event (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkpVk1TA_sg) the guy on the bottem right side of the screen looks a lot like him.

I did a search on the YAF blog. Chris Kulesza left a comment where he wrote "There is nothing I hate more than a bunch of no brained leftists on display in the streets."

Also, after looking into it, Kulesza was at the Tancredo event:

"As MSU officers arrived, an unidentified individual got into a shouting match with 18-year-old Chris Kulesza. The protestor accused Kulesza of being a "fucking racist" and as MSU police began to pull him from the room, spit on Kulesza."

Also, Kulesza was sitting in the front row at the Tancredo event:
